  • Abstract:

This project, funded by the European Commission, aims to boost women's representation in decision-making roles across European, national, and local levels in Greece. The project focused on reaching political parties, as well as women’s organizations and the general public and consisted of the following activities: Analysis of the situation of gender balances representation in political decision-making in Greece – including a web survey; a training program to support women candidates in elections and awareness-raising activities (organization of events, setting up of a website and printing of information material). Key findings revealed a low participation rate of women in politics, with only 10.6% female mayoral candidates and 4.6% elected as mayors. A web survey indicated that women felt underrepresented in politics, perceived to be more suited for 'social' issues, and often influenced by male family members. The survey also highlighted a lack of support from political parties and greater challenges faced by young female candidates. The candidate support program offered workshops and training to enhance communication strategies, deemed beneficial by participants. Awareness activities aimed to increase visibility and support for women in politics through digital platforms, media campaigns, and networking events. The project concluded that increasing women's political involvement requires coordinated efforts, actual support for interested women, backing from political parties, solidarity among women, and initiatives to combat gender stereotypes.
