Abstract:
Targeted to broad public, policymakers, trade unions and employer associations, Equal Pay Day draws attention to the pay gap between women and men and its causes. The aim is to stimulate the public debate on pay inequality and mobilize the relevant actors (politicians, trade unions and employer associations) to tackle the pay gap with appropriate approaches, solutions, and measures. Each year, the action day marks the day until which women must work beyond the end of that year to match their male counterparts’ pay from the previous year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, in 2019 the gender pay gap amounted to 20 percent. When converted, this results in 77 days (meaning that in 2021, for example, Equal Pay Day took place on 14 March). The action day, which was first held in Germany in 2008, has since grown into a year-round campaign. Thousands of people participate every year. Every year, Equal Pay Day is accompanied by a wide range of creative, nationwide public awareness campaigns. Causes and solutions – The annual campaign addresses different causes each year and promotes approaches that can be used to close the gender pay gap, thus keeping the issue alive in people’s minds.
