  • Abstract:

This action program supports women and men returning to work after interrupting their careers to care for children or relatives who are elderly or sick. It is targeted to women and men returning to work, as well as companies aiming to use the potential of those returning to work to secure skilled labor. However, employment biographies of women and men are fundamentally different. Taking on unpaid care work significant impact on life course prospects by women. Also, the type of professional re-entry decides essentially on one’s own livelihood – today and in old age – and a return to work part-time or in marginal employment often turns out to be a professional dead end. This program is therefore related to the promotion of women’s participation in national labor force, and thus to the domain of women’s economic and social power. The portal www.perspektive-wiedereinstieg.de offers related information, while the ESF federal returning to work programme offers concrete, local level advice and support. The programme provides advice and support to help families negotiate the redistribution of family-related and other domestic tasks, and highlights paths out of marginal employment. It informs company human resources managers about the potential of well-qualified returners to aid their efforts to secure skilled workers and establishes connections between institutions and associations. The program focused on following areas: Assistance in re-entering substantial occupation; compatibility of care tasks and gainful employment; strengthening of digital skills with the e-learning module “PWE@online”; support for women in marginal employment and for further professional development.
