EPAL/AdVT - Igualdade de Género
Best Practice
Promoter Information:
Abstract:
EPAL/AdVT is a company in the State Business Sector, part of the Águas de Portugal Group and supervised by the Ministry with responsibility for the Environment. EPAL/AdVT adheres to many initiatives that promote the role of gender equality in decision-making bodies. The driving factor behind EPAL/AdVT's initiatives in this area is the fact that it is a labour-intensive company with a much higher number of male employees than female employees, i.e. 73% vs 27% (Dec 2022). As this is a characteristic of companies with a highly operational nature, it is important to ensure that the issue of gender equality is being monitored and problems, if any, are being addressed. In particular, EPAL actively collaborates with the bodies responsible for creating and applying legislation in this area, as well as the CIG and CITE (equality national bodies), in terms of promoting activities dedicated to companies, in an attitude of partnership. As far as the Board of Directors is concerned, it is made up of two women and three men, thus complying with the applicable legislation, as far as the first line is concerned and in the remaining hierarchies (supervisory bodies, corporate bodies and top-level managers), the figures are balanced between men and women. In addition, an independent external analysis of remuneration distribution was carried out for the entire company, the conclusion of which indicates that no gaps have been identified within the company. This is a very important issue for EPAL, which is why it has signed the National Gender Equality Target and has been a member of the iGen - Organisations for Equality Forum task force since 2021. With regard to Gender Equality in leadership positions, EPAL has been increasingly proactive, incorporating the following strategies: publicising the issue internally and promoting the participation/training/coaching of its staff in events/courses/programmes/actions that enable them to develop skills to take on leadership positions, as well as eliminating gender bias in the choice of people for these positions; adherence to the National Target for Gender Equality; Participation in IGen; Membership of organisations that promote female leadership, namely Professional Women Network and Business as Nature.
