Abstract:
Finland is actively engaged in promoting gender equality through digitalization as part of the Generation Equality campaign. The country's leadership is evident in its participation in the Action Coalition on Technology and Innovation for Gender Equality, a significant initiative within the Generation Equality campaign that spans from 2022 to 2026. This coalition aims to mobilize a diverse range of stakeholders, including governments, businesses, UN agencies, and civil society, to address gender disparities in technology and innovation. A notable event occurred in 2023 when a High-Level Side Event hosted by the Action Coalition marked the launch of a year-long initiative focusing on gender and technological change. Finland's contributions to the coalition include efforts to combat gender-based online violence, address gender imbalances in STEM fields, and promote digital inclusion. These efforts are not merely rhetorical but translate into concrete actions, such as promoting decent work for women through technology, enhancing digital safety for women human rights defenders, and advancing digital literacy in developing countries. Finland's advocacy extends to international platforms, where it raises awareness about gender-based online violence in the contexts of the EU and UN. The annual session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in 2023 is dedicated to innovation and technological change, providing a strategic opportunity for Finland's initiatives to align with the global agenda for gender equality. The upcoming report by UN Women during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly will offer a comprehensive assessment of progress towards the Generation Equality campaign's objectives, reflecting the collective efforts to leverage digitalization for a more inclusive and sustainable future. One of the actions of the mentioned Action Coalition on Technology and Innovation for Gender Equality is to Invest in Feminist Technology and Innovation, having at its core goal to increase investments towards feminist technology and innovation by 50%, by 2026, to support women’s leadership as innovators and better respond to women and girls’ most pressing needs.
