  • Abstract:

Did you know that men are six times more likely than women to be suspected of a crime and also almost one and a half times more likely to be victims? Men live less healthily than women and are care avoiders: they come to a health care professional later than women with physical or mental complaints. This is strongly related to expectations based on their gender: after all, men are expected to solve problems themselves, seeking help is seen as a sign of weakness. And while in recent decades women have gained access to all sorts of traditionally 'male' domains and professional groups, the opposite is hardly happening. These are just a few small examples that show why there is still a world to be won for men as well. Men also experience the effects of gender inequality. For a truly gender-equal society, we therefore need both men and women. Men often do not know at all what problems women encounter in everyday life. By bringing these problems to men's attention, they can become part of the solution. Male emancipation is about questioning, expanding and transforming gender in general and masculinity in particular. As a women's organization, emancipation of men may not be immediately obvious. But it does not mean that your organization should suddenly consist of half men or that you should work (more) with men. It does mean recognizing men as part of gender issues. 'Masculinity' is a social construct that is responsible for or at least contributes to many of the problems that women and other emancipation organizations work on. the Men's Emancipation Toolkit arranged and used may help.
