  • Abstract:

The Netherlands is one of the 19 countries who took part in the "ALL IN: Towards gender balance in sport" (Joint Programme with 19 countries, 2018-2019). ALL IN is a European Union and Council of Europe joint project. Its aim is to support public authorities and sport organisations in designing and implementing policies and programmes addressing gender inequalities in sports, and in adopting a gender mainstreaming strategy. In the Netherlands, women are under-represented in the most powerful positions in sports federations. Since 2015, they have been tried to recruit and increase the number of women in decision-making bodies (55% of the sports federations did so). There are only two (8%) female presidents, gymnastics and basketball, and four (20%) vice presidents of sports federations. The Olympic Committee has a male president, and three vice-presidents, two of which women. The Olympic Committee has 57% women on its board, compared to the boards of the sports federations that have only 24% women. Over half of the sports federations are emphasising recruiting more women in leadership positions. In coaching, while 46% of registered coaches are women, only 19% of the elite level coaches are female. A quarter of the federations are taking action to recruit more female coaches. The Olympic Committee is active in relation to promoting and changing the situation for women in sports, with an emphasis on equality and safety. For its part, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport is active in improving the situation for female elite level athletes.
