  • Abstract:

The Global Mentoring Walks is an annual initiative that brings together established women leaders to mentor emerging female talents while walking together in their communities. These mentoring walks embody a shared belief that power and leadership grow when shared, helping to foster a culture of mutual support, empowerment, and mentorship. The initiative cuts across cultural, generational, religious, and national boundaries, connecting women and girls worldwide through the common goal of advancing women's leadership and empowerment. Each year, thousands of women and girls participate in these walks, engaging in discussions about leadership, career growth, and overcoming gender-based barriers. This unique format not only offers a one-on-one mentoring experience but also promotes dialogue and solidarity among women from various backgrounds, contributing to the development of a diverse, inclusive global network of female leaders. In 2017, the Global Mentoring Walk took place in Amsterdam, where the event was divided into three key parts: an opening session followed by two inspiring presentations. Dr. Magdalena Sedek, a prominent member of Merck's Women in Leadership Programme and an advocate for Diversity & Inclusion in Life Sciences in the Netherlands, delivered the first presentation. Dr. Sedek spoke on the significance of diversity and the role of inclusive leadership in shaping modern work environments. Her insights emphasized the value of women leaders in driving innovation and inclusivity in traditionally male-dominated fields like science and technology. The second presentation was given by Merida Miller, founder of Project Fearless, a program aimed at empowering young girls through confidence-building activities and leadership skills at an early age. She highlighted the critical role of female empowerment in shaping the next generation of leaders and discussed the importance of encouraging confidence, courage, and resilience in young girls as they begin to navigate their personal and professional journeys. The Global Mentoring Walks initiative, exemplified by events such as the one in Amsterdam, serves as a powerful platform for cross-generational mentoring, encouraging women to lift each other up, share their experiences, and cultivate leadership skills. By bringing together women from various walks of life, the event fosters a sense of community, reinforces the importance of mentorship, and inspires participants to become agents of change in their own spheres of influence. Through the ongoing efforts of the Global Mentoring Walks, women leaders continue to pave the way for more equitable and inclusive leadership opportunities for women worldwide, advancing gender equality and creating stronger, more diverse communities.
