  • Abstract:

At the Top Women Annual Event held in 2018 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the historical underrepresentation of women in society became a central focus. Marry de Gaay Fortman, then Chair of Topvrouwen.nl, highlighted the critical need to rewrite history to give women their rightful place as role models and leaders. She expressed a bold vision: to return to the Rijksmuseum with at least 200 portraits of contemporary women who are shaping today’s world, ensuring that their influence is not overlooked but celebrated. In a similar effort, the LOF Foundation had previously highlighted the achievements of fifty-five prominent women, ranging from Neelie Kroes to Herna Verhagen, as part of their work to showcase female leadership. Building on this initiative, more than 150 new Top Women were involved in a 2019 project aimed at further increasing the visibility of influential women across different sectors. Photographer Anette Brolenius masterfully captured these women in portraits that emphasized their strength, confidence, and leadership, without losing sight of their humanity. Each portrait reflects a woman who, through her position and influence, serves as a powerful role model. These women are not only leaders in their respective fields but also sources of inspiration for future generations of women striving to make their mark in society. This project has culminated in a digital gallery of portraits that showcases the diverse achievements of these Top Women, offering an accessible platform where their stories can inspire and motivate others. By spotlighting these contemporary leaders, the initiative seeks to inspire women in the Netherlands and beyond to follow in their footsteps, fostering a new generation of female leaders who will continue to influence and shape the future. The Top Women Annual Event and the accompanying portrait project are a step towards addressing the historical imbalance in the recognition of women's contributions. By ensuring that the accomplishments of women are visible and celebrated, this initiative encourages a cultural shift where female leadership is acknowledged and promoted as a key driver of societal progress.
