  • Abstract:

Since its inception in 2009, UrbanApa has carved out a significant niche within the Finnish arts community as an anti-racist and feminist collective. Operated by the UTT ry association since 2011, this vibrant community has dedicated itself to facilitating a broad spectrum of artistic endeavors, ranging from events and performances to arts incubators, clubs, music festivals, site-specific works, and workshops. UrbanApa's guiding mission is twofold: to create meaningful employment opportunities for artists and to cultivate a fertile ground for the birth and growth of innovative artistic endeavors and collaborations. Central to UrbanApa's ethos are the values of communality, intersectional feminism, decolonialism, inclusivity, equality, softness, play, and joy. These principles not only shape the community's diverse programming but also aim to construct a supportive space where artists and cultural professionals can exchange ideas and experiences. By doing so, UrbanApa endeavors to dismantle structural barriers, equip its members with the tools needed for feminist and inclusive practices, and encourage a collective reimagining of what the future of art could look like. UrbanApa specifically targets artists and cultural professionals who are keen on contributing to and engaging with a community that champions equity and diversity in the arts. This initiative represents a pivotal move towards fostering feminist leadership within the arts sector, aiming for a future where the arts community is as diverse and inclusive as the society it reflects. Through its comprehensive programming and commitment to its core values, UrbanApa not only supports the professional growth of individual artists but also contributes to the broader dialogue on equity and inclusion in the cultural sphere.
