  • Abstract:

The significance of diversity as a catalyst for enhanced performance in the startup ecosystem is widely acknowledged. However, despite this recognition, numerous studies indicate a lack of progress in achieving gender equality in investment. This issue was the focal point of a Slush side event organized in collaboration with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, UN Women Finland, and FiBAN (Finnish Business Angels Network) as part of the Generation Equality campaign. The discussion centred on gender equality in investment, but it is essential to recognise that other underrepresented groups also encounter structural inequalities in funding. The 2021 State of European Tech report revealed that ethnic minority teams face amplified barriers to funding, with only 1.3% of the total funding raised by companies in the study's sample going to ethnic minority founding teams. Moreover, it is imperative to acknowledge that gender is not binary, and discussions on this topic should encompass all genders and their diverse experiences. The mission of this discourse is to address the systemic biases and challenges faced by underrepresented groups in accessing funding within the startup landscape. The aim is to foster a more inclusive and equitable investment environment that recognises and supports the diverse talents and potential of all entrepreneurs. The target groups encompass startups, investors, policymakers, and stakeholders within the entrepreneurial ecosystem, with the overarching goal of driving positive change towards greater diversity and inclusion in investment practices.
