  • Abstract:

The GEARING-Roles initiative is a forward-thinking project that aims to reshape gender roles in the realm of professional careers, focusing specifically on research institutions. It is a collaborative effort involving a diverse consortium of 10 European entities, both academic and non-academic, committed to creating, applying, and assessing six Gender Equality Plans (GEPs). These plans are rigorously formulated through the phases outlined by the GEAR tool: define, plan, act, and check. GEARING-Roles' core mission is to confront and alter entrenched gender roles and identities in professional settings, promoting substantial institutional transformation towards equality and inclusiveness. Foundation Estonian Science Agency (ETAG), a governmental foundation based in Estonia that oversees R&D funding and research policy, participates in this project. While not leading any specific work package, ETAG's involvement as a GEP implementing body and active participant in project tasks contributes significant value due to its strategic position in Western Europe and its expertise in research. This project targets European research institutions eager to integrate gender equality into their operations and culture. GEARING-Roles aims to effect meaningful change, challenging and modifying the systemic obstacles to gender equality in academic and research environments. By redefining gender roles, the initiative intends to improve the professional domain for individuals of all genders, fostering a culture of equal opportunity and acknowledgment in the scientific community.
