Women make up less than 6% of the Armed Forces of Malta complement with the highest ranked female soldier being a lieutenant colonel. More than half of the female soldiers occupy the ranks of gunner and gunner recruit - the lowest ranks in the army. The highest ranked female is a lieutenant colonel and she is one of 12 women at officer grade.
