  • Abstract:

COVID-19 has affected men and women differently in Malta and the world over. The pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities. Due to their economic insecurity (NSO, SILC), women are socially and economically more vulnerable to the effects of this pandemic. With the pandemic women were expected to continue working while taking care of children and relatives at home, with the added chores this brought with it whilst adhering to and applying prevention measures for the household. The ramifications of this will be felt in the future if certain measures are not taken now. The Concultative Council for Women Rights (CCWR) underlines that women’s contribution to the pandemic needs to be taken on board and rewarded by ensuring that in the near future budgets and services are reviewed with a gender lens. It is also crucial that any services or policies need to be drawn in close collaboration with women’s groups and other civil society organisations.
