“Women Journalists and Other Dangerous Things” Campaign

Promoter Information:
Abstract:
On average, men earn 13,572 HRK more than women, equating to 1.68 HRK more in gross wages. Women make up 39% of the global workforce but hold only 27% of management positions. A study on women's representation in Croatian television news found that women account for just 8% of presence, despite journalism being predominantly a female profession. Women are often depicted in several contexts (health, beauty, entertainment, cooking, fashion, childcare), and are underrepresented in politics, economics, law, judiciary, and foreign policy. Two-thirds of women have faced some form of online abuse or harassment at least once, with women receiving three times more abusive comments on social media. In 2020, the Croatian Journalists' Union launched the "Women, Journalists, and Other Dangerous Things" campaign on Women's Day to promote women's social power, highlighting the need for equal pay for equal work, equal representation across all programming aspects, equal employment opportunities, and equal representation in editorial and management roles. The campaign also emphasizes the importance of addressing women's rights, combating the increased vulnerability of female journalists, promoting continuous education on women's rights, sexism, abuse, and discrimination, ensuring gender equality in the film industry, eliminating age discrimination, especially against female actors, advocating for women's rights in sports, fighting against all forms of sexism and gender discrimination in the workplace, promoting the concept of equal parenting, ensuring respectful treatment of women in visual media, protecting women from sexist and gender-discriminatory messages, and involving men in programs addressing equality issues, with emancipation as a common goal.
