Abstract:
The aim of the Women management Report (2023) is to describe and analyse the underrepresentation of women in top positions in the Austrian economy. In Austria in 2022, 50.7% of the population were women. This ratio in the population structure has existed for a long time. It has to be considered that the proportion of women among the employed has increased in the last 20 years: in 1999, 59.4% of people aged 15-64 are women, in 2022 the employment rate of women is at 68.1%. Neverthless the participation of women in relevant social decision-making processes is low - Women have been and are still being systematically excluded from influential, prestigious and profitable sectors of society, such as business, politics, science, media and culture. The reasons for the still asymmetrical representation of women in managerial positions in companies are of a structural nature: 1) gender stereotypes, and 2) career paths that are geared to classic gender roles so that the important positions in the economy (management, supervisory board) are predominantly to be clothed by men also in 2023.
