Abstract:
This 2021 study sheds light on the position of women in Greece’s public relation industry. Two web surveys administered to female public relations managers and employees examined (a) lived experiences of women in public relations in regard to their career advancement process, work-life balance and differential treatment and behaviour based on gender; (b) the office culture in terms of employee discussions, jokes made by colleagues, and inclusion in decision-making process; and (c) leadership perceptions. Therefore, this can be considered a study on women’s perception of their economic and social power. Results indicate that there are encouraging signs regarding the status of women in public relations as well as the recognition of public relations in general. However, despite the positive progress in the field, old stereotypes persist. Several practical implications have been derived from the findings. Private companies need to promote more family-friendly and clear work-hour policies while the industry of public relations should promote female role models. Education can also help reduce the stereotypical perceptions regarding female inequality in management and public relations.
