  • Abstract:

This briefing presents the position of women in the Greek society, as well as the status of Greece in the Gender Equality Index. It is evident that Greece has made progress concerning gender equality, however, underrepresentation of women in the sphere of political power (namely, in the Greek parliament) indicates the inequalities between women and men in the Greek society. The briefing provides an overview of women's representation in the Greek parliament since the 1990’s, relating it to women's representation in other areas of society. It concludes that the country is still behind the EU average and further steps towards achieving equality between the two genders need to be taken. In addition, the poor performance of Greece along with the backslides due to the COVID-19 pandemic shows that women in Greece are more vulnerable than men to the consequences of the crisis. The inequalities between men and women in salaries, power positions, childcare and household duties, access to education and health, as well as the stereotypes of the Greek society results in worst living conditions for women and expose them to risks of gender violence and sexual assaults and crimes. It is demanding that the government prioritizes these issues, introduce measures, and establish institutions that will empower the position of women in the Greek society. Especially, during the current crisis, women’s rights need to be protected and inequalities between the two genders need to be urgently eliminated.
