Abstract:
This is a 2019 conference paper by The Gender Advisory Team. GAT consists of women's rights practitioners and academics working on gender in Cyprus, who share a commitment to equality and peace. The paper relates to the sphere of political power, as it discusses the recommendations on governance and power-sharing from a feminist perspective using as a tool the UNSC Resolution 1325 (2000). The paper argues that traditional models of sharing power, which are based on hierarchical structures and notions of dominance and submission, are inherently flawed and unsustainable. Instead, it proposes a feminist model of power-sharing that is based on principles of equity, inclusivity, and mutual respect. The paper presents the GAT’s multi-level strategy in promoting women’s ideas and views on a culture of peace and gender equality. The recommendations mentioned in the paper were shared with the Cypriot negotiators and their advisors, the UN Good Offices and in European and international fora.
