  • Abstract:

Women are significantly underrepresented in research, particularly in leadership and decision-making roles. To address this disparity, Research Luxembourg launched the ‘Women & Girls in Science’ video series, an initiative designed to raise public awareness about the challenges women face in the scientific field while highlighting the achievements of accomplished female researchers. The campaign seeks to inspire and empower girls and women to pursue careers in science and research, fostering a more inclusive and diverse scientific community. Launched in 2022, the video series has successfully released three editions, each featuring six inspiring videos and a trailer, spotlighting the journeys of diverse women scientists in Luxembourg. These women come from different institutions, backgrounds, and scientific disciplines, ranging from PhD candidates and lab specialists to science communicators and professors. The series not only showcases their professional achievements but also delves into their personal motivations and the obstacles they’ve overcome, offering relatable role models for young girls interested in science. Key Objectives of the Initiative: Increase Visibility: Give greater visibility to women in science and their contributions, breaking down stereotypes about who can succeed in scientific fields. Empowerment: Empower women and girls by sharing stories of success and perseverance, illustrating that science is open to everyone, regardless of gender. Inclusion: Promote a more inclusive and equitable scientific landscape by addressing the barriers women face in research and decision-making roles. Inspiration: Encourage young girls to pursue careers in science by showcasing real-life examples of successful women researchers. Each video in the series explores a different woman’s journey in science, the path she chose, and her message to young girls considering a future in scientific fields. By featuring scientists from diverse disciplines and positions, the series demonstrates that a career in science offers numerous possibilities, from research and academia to science communication and specialized technical roles. The initiative’s target audience is the general public, aiming to shift societal perceptions of women in science and inspire the next generation of female researchers. The first edition alone garnered over 550,000 viewers and received widespread positive feedback on social media, demonstrating the campaign's impact and reach. Through this initiative, Research Luxembourg is not only celebrating the achievements of women in science but also working towards a future where gender equality is the norm in research, and where women are fully represented in all levels of scientific decision-making and leadership.
