Abstract:
This one-year project by European Solidarity Corps project "Cap the Gap", coordinated by YEU Cyprus, aims to promote the inclusion of young, under-represented people and women in everyday decision-making processes, and empower women and young people from marginalized groups within the political sphere, through informal education and various activities. It brought together women, girls, non-binary, and trans people together, along with gender experts and experts in urban planning, to identify the barriers in their daily city life, in Nicosia. By means of a survey, workshop and focus groups, three main issue areas were identified: a) the sense of safety among women is much lower compared to men b) mobility is lower amongst women compared to men, and especially migrant women, and c) there is a lack of maintenance of public spaces which mostly hinders women in their daily life. For example, from the survey it turned out that most of the respondents feel safe in daylight in the streets of Nicosia when they are alone (58,5% feels safe), but even more so when together with people (79,4% feels safe) in town. However, at night people feel much more unsafe in the streets, especially alone (29,4% feels safe) compared to together with people (64,7% feels safe). Together, the target population and experts also came up with potential solutions to make Nicosia safe and accessible for all groups in society. The project was run and executed by seven volunteers from across Europe and with different academic backgrounds.
