Abstract:

Cyprus is among the three EU countries with the lowest female political representation. Since 2006, there's been a significant decline in women's political appointments and participation. This lack of female presence in key decision-making bodies hampers the integration of gender perspectives in crucial areas. The project aims to promote women's leadership and active participation in decision-making across various sectors, including political parties, civil society, media, and academia. Its objectives are to strengthen civil society and the women's movement in Cyprus for advocating gender parity in decision-making and the peace process. This involves mapping studies, structured questionnaires, focus group meetings, semi-structured interviews with policymakers, capacity-building workshops, and the development of advocacy tools. Another goal is to increase the pool of female experts in underrepresented fields through the Expert Women Initiative, which includes training days, a database, and a YouTube channel. Additionally, the project seeks to empower women in political parties and promote gender equality within party structures and electoral programs through assessments, a leadership academy, and a Gender Equality Pledge. Expected outcomes include enhanced engagement and capacity of women's organizations for gender parity advocacy, development of supportive tools, and strengthened networks among women's groups and decision-makers in Cyprus.
