  • Abstract:

This article, focused on representation of women in political and economic power, discusses the importance of women's participation in decision-making processes at all levels of society, and highlights the challenges and opportunities for promoting women's leadership and representation in Cyprus. It provides an overview of the status of women's representation in politics and decision-making in Cyprus, noting that although progress has been made, women are still significantly underrepresented in decision-making positions. It argues this underrepresentation is a result of multiple factors, including cultural and societal attitudes, the political system, and the lack of supportive policies and programs. It also discusses initiatives and strategies for promoting women's leadership and participation in decision-making, including legislative measures, affirmative action policies, capacity-building and training programs, and awareness-raising campaigns, highlighting examples of successful initiatives from other countries, such as quotas for women's representation in politics, and notes the potential for similar measures in Cyprus. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of addressing the barriers and challenges facing women's leadership and participation in decision-making, and the need for a comprehensive and coordinated approach that involves multiple stakeholders, including the government, civil society organizations, and the private sector. It also emphasizes the potential benefits of greater women's participation in decision-making, including more inclusive and representative policies, greater social and economic equality, and a stronger democracy. Lastly, it provides a set of recommendations addressed to the government, political parties, Media, Women’s Organisations and NGOs, Businesses and Companies.
