Abstract:
This study compares Portugal with the rest of the European Union countries, from the beginning of the 21st century until 2016. It also makes a deeper analysis of eight European countries: Germany, Spain, France, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, and Sweden, reflecting different models of the Welfare State. For this purpose, we used a diverse set of databases from various sources: Eurostat, OECD, INE, GEP-MTSSS, DGEEC, DGRSP, ESS, ISSP and PORDATA. Inequalities represent differences in access and distribution of resources that are socially valued, such as money, power, education, culture, and prestige, according to the definition of João Ferreira de Almeida (2013). Women are the main victims of gender inequality around the world, suffering material and symbolic disadvantages compared to men. In recent decades, gender equality has been promoted at the legislative level, both in Portugal and in the international community, through pressure from feminist movements and groups linked to different gender identities. However, some legislative innovations have faced apathy, and even resistance, from those who must apply the laws. There are even institutions that proclaim gender equality, without this resulting in a substantial change in discriminatory rules or practices.
