  • Abstract:

"Women Standup!" originated from Inga Gaile's desire to mark Women's Day on March 8, 2014, with greater significance in Latvia. Observing a lack of initiatives that honor women's achievements and address the ongoing issues of discrimination and violence, Gaile created an event that empowered women to share their stories on stage without restraint. This initiative resonated with many, including Dzemma Sudraba, who was inspired to support and expand the project. "Women Standup!" has since evolved into a movement where Latvian women meet bi-weekly to practice storytelling, focusing on personal experiences rather than fictional roles, a departure from traditional acting techniques. The project's objectives are multifaceted: it aims to enhance women's self-perception and confidence by encouraging them to narrate their personal journeys, and it seeks to educate the audience about the realities of being a woman in contemporary Latvia. This initiative is transformative, not only for the women who participate but also for society's understanding of women's roles and experiences. It challenges conventional values and promotes a cultural shift towards recognizing and valuing women's voices and stories. "Women Standup!" targets Latvian women eager for personal expression and growth, as well as a wider audience interested in the diverse narratives of women in Latvia. Through storytelling, the project fosters a community of empowered women who are ready to challenge societal norms and advocate for a more inclusive and equitable society.
