Abstract:
Gender diversity remains a challenge within the banking industry. In order to tackle underrepresentation of women across banking boards and leadership positions, many European banks have outlined ambitious Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) plans. This report aims to discuss and analyze whether these plans and other initiatives are making changes that are sufficient for the banks to achieve full gender diversity across all management levels. It notes that on average in 2021, using a sample of 43 European banks, women represented only 37% of board member seats, this number decreased to 26% when considering women on executive management teams. Female representation at the Chief Executive position is even lower, only five of the 43 European Banks, had a female CEO in 2021. Gender quotas may have helped to boost female board representation, but management positions and positions of executive decision making continue to show higher participation by men.
